Copy Editing

Editing in the Modern World

These days, so much of editing is thought to be achieved by autocorrect or AI models. While you can teach computers the technical aspects, many companies still seek out editors and writers to teach AI the nuance of human communication. The comma splices and spelling errors are easy to detect, but it remains true that the human touch is required for any kind of writing or copy to be understood the way the author might have intended.

Part of being an editor is understanding when dynamic, emotional writing is essential to the goal of the content. The sample to the right highlights one of these instances. Your Life is Up to You is a book set for release in Fall 2025. The book is a memoir biography of the author growing up in poverty and beating the odds of escaping that lifestyle. Intending to be a hopeful influence, these blurbs allow the author to be impassioned about his life’s work in order to encourage readers who may have similar experiences or feel they’re stuck where they are.

While the straightforward biographical approach to the topics of the book and the background of the author could simply be proofread, the author trusted me to provide a sample of how nuanced developmental editing could provide a call to action for potential readers.
